1958: Queen opens revamped Gatwick

The Queen opens London’s extended airport at Gatwick on 9 June 1958.

More than ÂŁ7m was spent rebuilding the airport and adding a railway station. Gatwick claimed to be the first in the world to combine an airport, a trunk road and rail facilities into one unit.

Gatwick Airport had been under military control during World War Two and reopened as a civilian airport in 1946. Rebuilding work began in 1956, and services recommenced in 1958.
