1998: Military jet causes cable car tragedy

A NATO aircraft severed a cable car line at an Italian ski resort, killing 20 people people on 3 February 1998.

All but one of the victims were foreign tourists travelling in a cable car 6,000ft up Mount Cermis in the Dolomites.

US defence secretary William Cohen said the plane’s pilot, attached to the NATO mission in Bosnia, was unaware he had struck the cable.
