Here's a look back at the 1969 launch of the new 50p coin and the UK's preparations for the changeover to decimal currency in 1971.

As it was the highest-valued new coin, it had to be easily distinguishable, so designers came up with the world's first seven-sided coin. It came into circulation on 14 October 1969.

However, getting used to all this change was a big challenge for retailers and consumers alike, as this video shows.
