Great Britain's Toby Roberts finished third in the Olympic sport climbing boulder semi-final, with compatriot Hamish McArthur eighth to put them in a strong position to qualify for Friday's final.

The semi-final is split into two elements - boulder and lead - with the second event taking place on Wednesday.

A maximum of 100 points are available for each of the boulder and lead semi-finals and Roberts, 19, scored 54.1 as McArthur, 23, scored 34.2.

Climbers must finish inside the top eight to reach Friday's final at Le Bourget.

Roberts, who won the European qualifying event last year to book his place in Paris, scored a controversial 9.9 of 25 available points on the first boulder after judges deemed he had not held the move for long enough.

He scored 9.7 and 9.9 on the next two boulders but reached the top of the final boulder to score 24.7 and put himself in a good position to reach the final.

McArthur competed third in the 20-strong field but managed to hold his position inside the top eight, scoring 9.9, 10.0, 9.3 and 5.0.

China continued their dominance of Olympic table tennis with victory in the men's singles - their third gold from three events so far in Paris.

Second seed Fan Zhendong came from behind to avoid an upset against 19th-ranked Truls Moregard of Sweden.

Fan won 7-11 11-9 11-9 11-8 11-8, and although Moregard saved five gold medal points in the final set, Fan was finally able to get the win over the line and spark wild celebrations from the overwhelmingly Chinese-supporting crowd.

Earlier, there was also joy at the table tennis arena for the hosts, as 17-year-old Felix Lebrun has won men's singles bronze for France.

The teenager defeated Brazilian opponent Hugo Calderano in straight sets, 11-6 12-10 11-7 11-6.

Sometimes, the difference between Olympic gold and silver is the narrowest of margins. In this case, three millimetres.

The men's individual archery final between Kim Woo-jin of South Korea and Brady Ellison of USA came down to a one-arrow shoot-off as they were tied at 5-5 after five sets.

The fifth set had ended 30-30, after both men hit the 10-point bullseye with all three of their arrows.

In the shoot-off, whoever fires their arrow closest to the centre of the target wins. Kim shot his 58mm from the middle, then Ellison's landed 61mm away.

By that margin, top seed Kim won gold while Ellison - twice a world champion but never an Olympic champ - took silver.

Lee Woo-seok also got on the podium for Korea, winning the bronze medal match 6-0 versus Germany's Florian Unruh, who earlier beat Tom Hall of Great Britain in the round of 16.
