Wakefield get us going as they take on Catalans before the newly-named Leigh Leopards begin their Super League campaign with the visit of Salford.

Warrington's Stefan Ratchford told ±«Óãtv Radio 5 Live sports extra:

"It was a great start to the year. Looking back on the disappointment of last year, it was something we mentioned at the start of pre-season that we wanted to put that behind us as quickly as possible.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game but we came out fighting and it's a great way to start the year.

"Last year we were scoring more than enough points to win games but conceding too many. One thing we wanted to get right was our defence.

"We know this side can score points but we have got to have the right attitude defensively and I thought we showed that tonight.

"When Leeds went in for their second try you could see the disappointment on the boys' faces. Defence means a lot to us this year and it's something we've put a big focus on."

Warrington half-back George Williams told ±«Óãtv Radio 5 Live sports extra:

"We're happy with that. In round one you've just got to win but that first half was probably better than we thought.

"We were 100% with the ball and when you complete that's what happens.

"Last year we didn't defend very well and I think you probably saw an improvement tonight, we defended better and we made Leeds, who are a great attacking side, look average. That was down to our defence.

"[Forwards] Paul Vaughan and James Harrison down the middle were fantastic and did big minutes. They dug really deep and laid the platform for us."

Warrington have definitely put a statement out. When Daryl Powell was asked before the season what he wanted his team to be he rolled out a list of adjectives that weren't particularly adventuous but they were all reminiscent of a team that wins, with words like aggressive, honest.

They ticked every one of them and fulfilled everything Daryl Powell suggested he wanted his team to look like and be.

It's a fantastic night for Warrington and a warning shot to the rest of Super League that they mean business.

They have a team that is more than capable, with Daryl Powell's fingerprints all over it.

It's all over at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

What a stunning performance from Warrington who left the scars of a poor 2022 campaign behind them and flew off from kick-off.

Quite the opposite for Leeds on the other hand, who looked off it for the entire game, with Richie Myler putting in a performance to forget on a night to forget.

He's had an absolutely horrendous opening night.

In the last 10 minutes Warrington have really tightened it up and played direct.

They've clearly got the message down that Leeds are out on their feet, they have done so much work.

Warrington have not moved away from the middle and Greg Minikin has come in there with a really strong carry amongst those tired forwards.

Derrell Olpherts picks up the ball and immediately spills it.

Kind of sums up Leeds' night, really.

If this was a boxing match it would have been finished a long time ago on points.

Leeds have been beaten to a pulp and they have had a lot to contend with from a really aggressive Warrington defence and a fantastic display of attacking rugby.

It was some nice play from Leeds down the left side and some good hands to put him in the corner.

That will be a confidence boost for Leeds. They have showed that they have got a play in them.

Leeds are over through Derrell Olpherts at the corner, but it's gone upstairs.

Will it be given?

Matty Ashton bats away Richie Myler's attempted pass as Leeds try to run in at the corner and catch Warrington out.

The visitors keep the ball alive, with Justin Sangare coming close to going over before Cameron Smith work it to Morgan Gannon who's held up.

Aidan Sezer works it wide to Luis Roberts but eventually Matty Ashton wins the ball back for Warrington.
