Denmark have faced China more than any other team at the Women's World Cup, but they are yet to win against the Asian side.

China have won two of the three meetings with the other one being a draw.

Denmark are making their return to the Women’s World Cup after missing each of the last three tournaments.

Denmark had qualified for four of the first five editions of the competition, reaching the quarter-finals in both 1991 and 1995. Can they do better this year?

China are making their eighth appearance at the Women’s World Cup, having only failed to qualify in 2011.

They have reached the knockout rounds in all seven of their previous appearances. No Asian team has recorded more wins (16) or scored more goals (53) than China at the Women’s World Cup.

Denmark's Signe Bruun scored 13 goals in qualifying, tied for third-most in Europe, behind only Belgium’s Tessa Wullaert (17) and Germany’s Lea Schuller (15).

Bruun scored at least one goal in all seven of her appearances in qualifying, including a five-goal performance against Bosnia and Herzegovina, but is not named in the starting XI today.

Wang Shanshan (pictured below and who does start) and Wang Shuang (among the substitutes today) led China with five goals each at the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup while Tang Jiali (another who is a sub today) scored four times.

China were the only team with three different players to score four or more goals in that tournament

China are only one place below Denmark, who are 13th, in the world rankings so they are pretty equal. I just think the Danes will have more attacking spark. 2-0

China have qualified for the World Cup on eight of the nine occasions it has been held, finishing as runners-up in 1999 after losing to the United States in the final.

Last year China won the Asian Cup and their squad for 2023 includes uncapped Celtic midfielder Shen Mengyu.

Denmark are back in the World Cup for the first time since 2007 and cruised through qualifying, winning all eight matches, scoring 40 times and only conceding twice.

Their squad includes seven players from the Women's Super League - Everton quartet Katrine Veje, Rikke Sevecke, Nicoline Sorensen and Karen Holmgaard, Reading's Sanne Troelsgaard, West Ham's Emma Snerle and Arsenal's Kathrine Kuhl.

They are captained by forward Pernille Harder, who won the WSL title three times with Chelsea before moving to Bayern Munich earlier this summer.

England's Georgia Stanway scored the only goal of the game after seeing her initial spot kick saved with VAR ordering it to be retaken as the Haiti goalkeeper was ruled to be off her line.

Former Chelsea forward Pernille Harder, who moved to Bayern Munich earlier this summer, will lead Denmark out on to the pitch as captain, with Arsenal's 20-year-old Kathrine Kuhl starting in the midfield.

There are starts too for Everton quartet Rikke Sevecke, Karen Holmgaard, Katrine Veje and Nicoline Sorensen.

The 28-year-old Racing Louisville attacker starts on the bench, with Zhang Rui and Wang Shanshan, who both have over 100 caps, providing the experience for Shui Qingxia's side.
