Goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic is the hero, saving three penalties in the shootout, as Croatia edge past Japan with a 3-1 victory to reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

Brazil delivered an ominous message to their World Cup rivals with a dazzling display of attacking brilliance to dismantle South Korea and set up a quarter-final against Croatia.

Neymar made a goalscoring return to action after injury at Stadium 974, but Brazil's superstar was only one element of a devastating performance that ripped South Korea to shreds and settled this last-16 game well before half-time.

Vinicius Junior set the tone with a composed penalty-area finish from Raphinha's cross after seven minutes, and Neymar doubled Brazil's advantage from the spot six minutes later fouling a foul on Richarlison.

It was Neymar's 76th goal for Brazil, leaving him just one behind the legendary Pele's all-time record.

Richarlison then added to his personal showreel of great goals at this World Cup when he followed his spectacular volley against Serbia with a real work of art, controlling the ball three times with his head and foot before moving into position take Thiago Silva's pass in his stride and score.

Brazil went four up with another gem after 36 minutes, Vinicius picking out Lucas Paqueta for West Ham's expensive acquisition to score with a well-placed volley.

South Korea, to their great credit, continued to compete and forced several fine saves from Brazil keeper Alisson, before substitute Paik Seung-ho pulled one back with a glorious 30-yard strike to add to the night's collection of special goals.

Who can stop Brazil? Croatia will be trying to on Friday in the quarter-finals.

We know where the bar is because every campaign since Brazil won the World Cup in 2002 has ended when they've faced a European side in the knockout stages.

Croatia are older in midfield than four years ago. Holland are just below the top flight.

The draw has opened up nicely, so I think we have to wait until the final to see them face a top European side.

• Richarlison has scored 10 goals in his nine appearances for Brazil in all competitions in 2022, netting at least four goals more than any other player for the country this calendar year
• Neymar has been involved in 15 goals in his last 11 appearances for Brazil in all competitions (eight goals, seven assists), with each of his last six goals for the national side coming from the penalty spot.
• Brazil led 3-0 after just 29 minutes, the earliest they've gone three goals ahead in a single World Cup match. In the end, it was just the second time they've scored four goals in the first half of a World Cup match, also doing so against Mexico in 1954.
• Neymar became just the third Brazilian to score in at least three editions of the World Cup (2014, 2018, 2022), along with Pelé (1958, 1962, 1966, 1970) and Ronaldo (1998, 2002, 2006).

The Brazilian players have just stood arm-in-arm holding up a giant banner for Pele on the pitch. They then go over to their supporters behind the goal to our left and start dancing. Neymar is on somebody's shoulders.

We only had one goal in the second half and what a goal it was. South Korea are heading home, but Paik Seung-ho will always remember this effort.

Lucas Paqueta's volley made it 4-0 after 36 minutes.

It was 3-0 after 29 minutes. Richarlison started the move with some ball juggling and then finished it off following a lovely one-touch move.

Thirteen minutes on the clock and it was 2-0 on the scoreboard thanks to Neymar winning the mind games to convert a penalty.

It only took seven minutes for Brazil to make the breakthrough via this from Vinicius Jr.

Right, let's have a look at the goals we've seen tonight - and there have been some beauties....

Pele's record as Brazil's top male goalscorer of all-time lasts for a few more days, with Neymar, on 76 goals, just one goal behind him now.

Brazil show why they are ranked as the best team in the world with a first-half destruction of South Korea, scoring four in the opening 36 minutes.

South Korea actually won the second half, after a stunning 30-yard strike from Paik Seung-ho, but Brazil cruise through and it is going to take some performance from anyone to stop them.
