Another of the early kick-offs pits two clubs with Champions League aspirations together, with Bayer Leverkusen hosting Ferencvaros, who are Hungary's most successful club.

They reached the Champions League group stages for the first time since the 1995-96 season last year but returning to the European pinnacle has been a gradual process.

Chief executive Pal Orosz and his team took over a club in a "disastrous situation" in 2011, picking up the pieces after a spell during which they were relegated to the second division because of financial irregularities.

"When we started it was kind of in ruins," he said. "The Albert Stadium that we liked a lot because of the good memories was not up to the European standards, nobody in the club got a salary for more than four months, no bills were paid, no electricity, nothing. We had to invest some money to start with," he says.

"We had to be realistic and see where we can get with our background, with our financial background. You have to set realistic goals and reach them. That is what football is about.

"We said first we have to come back on the Hungarian stage, winning the cup and the championship, and then the next level will be the international stage.

"It was long work. I say this achievement we have is extraordinary - getting into the group stage, starting from the first qualifying round. With our financial background, sporting background, we are a classic 'Europa League group-stage club', so for us (reaching the Champions League last year) is something fantastic."

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou acknowledges the "historical significance" Seville holds for the club as they return to the Spanish city 18 years on from their extra-time defeat to Porto in the Uefa Cup final to face Real Betis.

"When you walk around Celtic Park, there are images everywhere of Martin O'Neill or our fans enjoying that day in Seville, so of course that has an impact," he said.

"But it also motivates you to make your own stamp. That's what I keep saying to this team - they've got an opportunity to create their own moments in this club's history."

Betis are back in Europe for the first time since 2018-19 thanks to a sixth-place finish last season under former Manchester City and West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini.

Postecoglou added: "Betis had a fantastic season last year and they've got an outstanding manager but they're the type of opposition we want to test ourselves against.

"It's why we were so pleased to get into this group stage because we knew we'd get some pretty exciting fixtures. We want to enjoy it but we'll only do that if we have an impact."

Rennes captain Hamari Traore said: "We have to start with a very good attitude. It's an attractive game to be playing against Tottenham. We have some of the best fans in France. We have to get them behind us and put in a great performance."

Rennes coach Bruno Genesio added: "They have very little possession, counterattack a lot. They create few chances, don't shoot often, a bit like us actually. But they're a team that's used to the Champions League, they played in the final two years ago."

Tottenham may have hung on to their star player in England captain Harry Kane this summer but tonight's opponents Rennes could not do the same, as 18-year-old Eduardo Camavinga joined Real Madrid.

And the teenager played a key role in the Spanish giants' victory in the Champions League last night, teeing up substitute Rodrygo for an 89th-minute winner away at Inter Milan.

The came after the wonderkid scored on his debut as Real beat Celta Vigo 5-2 in La Liga on Sunday.

Nuno Espirito Santo has left both Son Heung-min and Eric Dier back in north London in the hope they will return to fitness in time for Sunday's Premier League clash with Chelsea.

Son injured his calf while on international duty with South Korea while Dier suffered a dead leg in Spurs' 3-0 defeat by Crystal Palace on Saturday.

"I cannot say (whether they will be fit for Sunday)," said Nuno."They are improving, day by day they are better, but alongside the South American players, we still have to assess.

Those South American players are Argentina's Giovani lo Celso and Cristian Romero and Colombia's Davinson Sanchez, who are training in Croatia and expected back at the club on Saturday.

The trio defied Premier League guidelines to travel for World Cup qualifiers last week.

Dinamo Zagreb will be no pushovers today.

Last season they won the Croatian double and knocked Tottenham out of the Europa League.

They are unbeaten in 13 Europa League group matches, winning their last four and only conceding once in their last eight such games.

Defender Rasmus Lauritsen said: "They play physical football in England.

"For sure it will be a physical game, but we showed before in Europe that we are good at handling these physical opponents."

West Ham boss David Moyes accepts it will take his side time to gain European experience.

This is only the ninth time West Ham have ever been in Europe - and the first time they've played in a group stage.

The last time they won a European game - not including qualifiers - was 1999, against another Croatian side in Osijek.

"We understand we're up against an experienced opponent and we’re still relatively new to the challenge," said Moyes.

"We've tried to take on everything really positively, really forward-thinking and are trying to be aggressive in our own way, but ultimately we know that we're new to the competition as far as recent history goes.

"But we've got a good squad and hopefully we'll get to understand it the longer we go in the competition."

In the Europa League, West Ham visit Dinamo Zagreb in the early kick-off while Celtic travel to Seville to face Real Betis, before Rangers host Lyon and Leicester City welcome Napoli.

Meanwhile, Tottenham kick-off their Europa Conference League group-stage campaign with a trip to France to face Rennes.

The Champions League group stages returned with a bang this week and tonight it is the turn of the the Europa League and the inaugural Europa Conference League.
