Southampton over Shrewsbury in their rearranged FA Cup third-round tie at St Mary's.

Daniel N'Lundulu opened the scoring for a much-changed Saints side with a low effort into the bottom left corner.

And James Ward-Prowse's late free-kick sealed their win against a plucky Shrewsbury team.

The fixture was originally scheduled for 9 January but was called off after a coronavirus outbreak at the League One club.

Shrewsbury assistant coach Aaron Wilbraham: "I am really proud of the boys. To be off for 14 days and come back and have three days training for a game against Premier League opposition, I thought they were unbelievable.

"We had to change it a bit because of people's legs. If you give [James] Ward-Prowse a free-kick there you know what he can do.

"We were always in the game and put them under pressure."

Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl: "Every young lad did a good job. You could see in the dressing room they were a little bit nervous. They have to be brave, they know what they have to do and it was a good first game for them.

"We tried [to score a second earlier]. It is not important to score three or four goals it is important to go to the next round. Che [Adams] had some chances in the last few minutes.

"It will be a little bit tougher [against Arsenal]. For us it is a chance to step into the next round. We would like to have the fans here, that is what we are missing."

You could tell Shrewsbury haven't had a game for a long time they lacked a bit of fitness and sank further and further back into their own half.

They tried to change their tactics towards the end to get back in the game but it back fired and it just allowed Southampton to open up a lead which they did towards the latter stages.

Job done for Southampton as a first-half goal from Dan N'Lundulu, his first for the club, followed by a late free-kick by James Ward-Prowse are enough to see off League One Shrewsbury Town.

It's Arsenal at home next for the Saints, with that fourth-round tie on Saturday.

Southampton and Arsenal will be sick of the sight of each other.

They will be playing each other at St Mary's in the FA Cup on Saturday and then again at the same venue a few days later in the Premier League on Tuesday.

Really good free-kick by James Ward-Prowse but if you keep giving Southampton free-kicks on the edge of the area that is ultimately what is going to happen. It's a great free-kick though. The keeper manages to get a good hand on it so he'll probably be quite disappointed with that.

The only disappointing thing for Ralph Hassenhuttl will be that the tie hasn't been put to bed a bit earlier.

Southampton's Che Adams goes around the goalkeeper, but Aaron Pierre blocks it on the goalline. That was nearly game over.

Can Shrewsbury find a moment of magic to take this one into extra-time?

A Saints first-team debut for Alexandre Jankewitz as he comes on for Caleb Watts for what Ralph Hasenhuttl hopes will only be a five-minute run-out.

Stuart Armstrong has only been on for a few minutes for Southampton and nearly makes an instant impact as he strikes at goal but can only hit it wide from outside the penalty area.

Now some fresh legs for the Saints with Stuart Armstrong and Che Adams on for Kegs Chauke and Shane Long.

Shrewsbury's Aaron Pierre is waiting to head at goal at the back post from Shaun Whalley's free-kick from the left, but Shane Long does well to nod it away from danger and the following corner comes to nothing.

Shrewsbury change things around with Rekeil Pyke, Ryan Sears and Dave Edwards all coming on, with Daniel Udoh, Scott Golbourne and Ollie Norburn going off.
