Pep Guardiola has expanded on the unfortunate news about Fernandinho's injury in the post-match news conference, telling journalists he will be out for up to six weeks.

Guardiola said: "Bad news, his leg will be, I think four – six weeks out, yes it is a big blow for us with these amount of games and no people there. But it is what it is."

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to BT Sport: "The last 10-15 minutes of the first half and the start of the second we played well.

"This is a good start for us and the next step we go to France to get the second one.

"At set pieces they were strong. By the second half we didn't concede anything set pieces or counter attacks so we controlled the game.

"Here in Champions League is an opportunity to play five substitutions and the ones that came on made incredible contribution. We had decided before the goal [to substitute Gundogan] but he made an incredible goal.

"Teams that set up with lots back you have to wait for your moment. We adjusted a little something at the end of the first half. We spoke about being patient, we had to be patient and at the right moment attack them, so we let them run."

On an injury to Fernandinho: "Bad news, in the place he was injured [before]. He will be out a long time. It's happened."

Romelu Lukaku scored a dramatic 90th-minute equaliser as Inter Milan rescued a point against Borussia Monchengladbach in their opening Champions League Group B game.

After a goalless first half, Belgium forward Lukaku put Inter ahead from close range with his eighth goal in eight games for club and country.

But Monchengladbach's Ramy Bensebaini levelled from the penalty spot after Arturo Vidal lunged into Marcus Thuram inside the box.

Jonas Hofmann kept his composure to fire the German visitors ahead after sprinting clear but Lukaku had the last word when he managed to scramble the ball home at the far post with his knee after a corner.

Elsewhere, Liverpool's Group D rivals Atalanta hammered Midtjylland 4-0 in Denmark.

It was important to get the first win on the board - Man City didn't seem as confident as maybe they would of in times gone by but to have conceded the early goal and then come back from that straight away that seemed to settle the nerves. Going forward they deserved the three points.

I am part of the defenders union so I would say Kyle Walker played well and so did Joao Cancelo in parts, overall CIty looked quite solid which was good because Porto had a dynamic front line at times.

You could see how much it meant to Pep Guardiola to see the new player Ferran Torres getting on the score sheet. As a defender, people come at you with speed and skill which you can defend against sometimes but not all the time. The more players City have like that on their books the bigger danger they will be going forward.

Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to BT Sport: "It was good enough to win the game. That's what you need. I think both teams could play better football. At moments it was wild. The pitch was deep and muddy. Three days ago it looked completely different and in training yesterday it looked different.

"But we did not take our chances which was a shame. Ajax had a big one which hit the post. When you're 1-0 up, these things can happen. But overall I'm happy with the game. It was not sunshine football but we wanted three points and we got it.

On Fabinho's goalline clearance: "I don't know how it happened in the beginning. That's a good example of how the boys did today. It was not perfect but they fought brilliantly. I really liked the fresh legs up front. Jordan Henderson - the medical staff told me no 90 minutes - but he did well. Rhys Williams played non-league football last year and now he has some Champions League football so what a moment for him. Some nice stories, three points.

"Xherdan Shaqiri was lively and Takumi Minamino was unbelievable. He is like a machine. It helps when you can make five changes."

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan on BT Sport; "If I'm being honest we are struggling at the moment.

"Fernandinho went off at the end, we have players playing in different positions. I am not 100% there because I had Covid, we are not all at the same moment.

"That is the challenge for this season, it's not going to end for a while. It's not going to be difficult for Pep to pick an XI because players are going to be tired."

Fabinho was immense. Everything he did, he stepped onto the play and broke things up, he stepped in at the right times when he knew there was a danger, headed everything that came into the box. What I liked about it was he didn't have the attitude of 'I have to be Virgil van Dijk, where I pull things down and play out from the back.' If it needs to go it goes and he just dealt with situations comfortably and cleared his lines and that sounds really easy at times but it's knowing your limits and knowing how to play.

Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder James Milner talking to BT Sport: "It's always important to start well, it was a tough away game first up so that's a bonus and they're a good team. They were well organised, played good football and we've had an up and down week and so it was important to bounce back which we did and I expected nothing less from this group of players.

"Fabinho is a top player and top players can adapt and he did that. He's played there before and played very well. I thought it was a good team performance because it was tough out there, it was a physical battle under tricky conditions.

"We'll take anything in relation to a goal, we had enough chances, we were disappointed not to score more. We had a good number of counter attacks which we didn't finish off. It's a big clean sheet, with the changes we've made this week especially and they're a good team, so it was important to get the clean sheet and take the points."

Liverpool will be delighted with a clean sheet. They've been put under huge pressure by Ajax. Fortunate towards the end with Adrian rushing out there. Job done for Liverpool though, three points and a clean sheet.

All over and Manchester City come from behind to kick off their Group C campaign with a win.

It wasn't easy at times but Liverpool pick up an away victory in their first Group D game.

A good start by Jurgen Klopp's men.
