  3. Recap...published at 17:38 British Summer Time 19 October 2023

India made light work of the chase as openers Shubman Gill (53) and skipper Rohit Sharma (48) began in imperious fashion with a stand of 88 for the first wicket.

However, the day belonged to Virat Kohli who made his first hundred of the tournament. Ever the showman he sensed an opportunity to inject some adrenaline into a game which was meandering to a finish.

The India batter upped the ante as he chased a century, smacking a six off Nasum Ahmed to seal victory by seven wickets and reach three figures - his 48th hundred in ODIs.

  4. Recap...published at 17:30 British Summer Time 19 October 2023

A quick recap then. Bangladesh were asked to bat first and after a circumspect start looked well placed to make a competitive total at 91-0 in the 15th over, thanks to 51 from Tanzid Hasan, but they were unable to kick on and lost wickets at regular interbals.

Liton Das was guilty of giving his wicket away cheaply on 66 when he needed to bat through. India were electric in the field - and especially Ravdrina Jadeja who took a superb catch to dismiss Mushfiqur Rahim.

Mahmudullah struck some blows towards the end of the innings but a total of 256 felt below par.

India captain Rohit Sharma: "It was a good win. We did not start well but we pulled it back well in the middle stages and at the back end as well. The last three games we have played, our fielding has been superb. We continued that today. It is something that is in your control. You try and put in as much effort as you can. Bowlers were smart enough to understand what sort of lines and lengths were needed.

"All of us in the squad have gone through such pressure - crowds coming in big numbers. It is special for us. The crowd has not disappointed us and I am pretty sure it is going to get bigger and louder moving forward."

On Ravindra Jadeja: "He was brilliant with the ball and took a brilliant catch. But a hundred is a hundred [from Virat Kohli] - you cannot beat that."

On Hardik Pandya's injury: "He pulled up a bit sore. There is no major damage, that is good for us. But obviously with an injury like that, we have to assess every day and we will do whatever is required."

Here's that Virat Kohli six finish to win the game and bring up his first century of this World Cup. You suspect it will not be the last time he reaches three figures in the tournament.

Anyone who thinks Kohli isn’t a team player obviously doesn’t follow Indian cricket. He wouldn’t do that in a knockout game, but a league game with lots of overs left, plenty of others would have done the same.

It seems Rohit Sharma has pulled them together as a team. Sometimes you can look at Indian cricket teams and it can look fragmented. But here the camaraderie they seem to have it is just easing the pressure and external noise. So many people want them to win so the quieter he can make that noise the better chance they have of performing.

Incredibly selfish & disrespectful at the end there by a certain Mr Kohli - it would have a certain irony if somewhere down the line India fell a cropper of net run rate after that show!!

India look formidable at the moment. Only two teams could challenge them now I think. South Africa could post a big total. And then the camaraderie of New Zealand could pose a challenge too.

It was almost as if Virat Kohli sensed the opportunity to create some theatre.

Knowing he had the capacity to blow off the roof at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium if he made a hundred.

Player of the match, India's Virat Kohli: "I wanted to make a big contribution.

"I've had a few fifties in World Cups and haven't converted them so I just wanted to finish the game off this time around and hang around to the end, which is what I've done over the years for the team.

"It was a dream start for me with two free hits. It just calms you done and lets you get into the innings.

"The pitch was pretty good, it allowed me to play my game and just hit the gaps.

"There is a great atmosphere in the changing room, we're loving each other's company, the spirit is there for everyone to see on the field.

"We understand it's a long tournament and you need to create some momentum for the guys to come out and play like this.

"It's a special feeling playing at home in front of all these people and we just want to make the most of it."
