Isle of Scalpay

As Hamish Haswell-Smith writes: "Scalpay is a thriving island - with change being the penalty for successÂ…the Scalpachs have managed to maintain a vigorous community when many other islands have lost theirs."

Scalpay lies to the east of the town of Tarbert, where Lewis becomes Harris. It has a population of about 400 and is owned by John Taylor, a London architect who bought it in the early 1980s.

Scalpay is another one of the Western Isles to be joined to Harris - this time by a 300 metre bridge built only in 1997.

Eilean Glas lighthouse on the eastern coast was for a long time the only light in the Western Isles. It was built by Robert Louis Stevenson's grandfather from Aberdeen granite and is now automatic and unmanned.

Fishing (mostly prawns) is the mainstay of the island's industry.
