Ae you from Unst and have ancestors in New Zealand?

I've just come back from a tour of South Island New Zealand and have some photos that may interest somebody. We were at Charlestown on the West Coast and in the camp-site I found some old photos of Shetlanders who settled on Nine Mile Beach near Charlestown during the Gold Rush in the 1880's. Somebody then told me about a graveyard that was full of Shetlander and so I went and took some photos. It turned out that they were all from Unst with names of Anderson, Laurenson, Harper and Mouat. So you may have some long lost ancestors. None of them seemed to live very long in the extreme environment and quite a few of them drowned at sea which is very rough there though the Shetlanders seemed to survive better than most. They still gold mine in this area and the gold can be seen in the sand. They had a wonderful spot to live in surrounded by weka birds and sub-tropical bush but lots of rain and sand-flies.

Carol, I didn't get many photos because early in the trip my camera got attacked by some sticky grass that got into the mechanisms. The best place I found was Wanaka in the south which had few flies and classic Scottish-type mountains but larger. It was much easier to do hill walking around there. I don't know how well you know NZ but the West Coast tends to be very wet. let me know if you want to know anything specific, I might know! I didn't get any further south than that, ran out of time. On balance I prefered the south island, it was much quieter. Hokitika and Ross were good, the former has a very cheap swimming pool with a hot tub.

on the north island i found the swimming pools or "hot pools" as they were often called really good also on the coromandel pennisula there is a place called "hot water beach" where you dig your own hole in the sand and sit in it and the water is lovely and hot-brilliant-coromandel is on the pacific coast where the ocean is lovely, warm and calm great for families-the other side-tasman sea side is surfers paradise-kare-kare,piha bethells beach(te henga) black sands(volcanic) i love the place and can't wait to go back. If you want to exchange information you can get my e-mail adress from IBHQ or my home adress, bye for now

Was there in fact much gold to be found in New Zealand, aquaerial? Strange that they would all come from Unst. I assume that those gold diggers came straight from Baltasound and such, and are not descendants of the inhabitants of the Australian penal colonies. Perhaps you could look into it some more, aquaerial. I am sure the Unst sailors did not end there simply because they could not read a compass (surely not?!).

i sent a comment but it seems to have gone astray-again! I found loads of swimming pools in the north island to be great fun--for all ages. on the coromandel pennisula there is a place called "hot water" beach" you go to the beach, dig a hole and you have your own hot tub--brilliant. I found that beaches on the pacific coast were great places for families to swim, wheras the tasman sea coast the beaches with black sand(lava) and the waves were brilliant-surfers paradise but also very, very dangerous-pascal has been nipoed out of the sea by helico on a couple of occasions: If you want to exchange photos or more info you can get my e-mail adress through ibhq or my adress over here (in france)

In short, I don't know about shantytown. It was never mentioned. It was Charlestown we went to which was above Hokitika. If anybody wants a photo, I've got to work out how to do it on the web, I'm new to this blogging and my main computer is down at the moment.. Sorry about that.

To mjc from NM, USA. There is still a working gold mine at Ross which I gather in the past has produced the largest nugget in New Zealand and was given to the King..People still work the beaches for gold under license. I'm told the entire town is built over a gold deposit and the mine has permission to mine it if the residents agreed to move out. I don't know where the Unst people came from, they could have got there via Australia, most of the gold rush people did come over from Australia in Ross.Particularly the Irish. I was hoping somebody in Unst would know, its not that long ago really. Many people on Whalsay live to over a hundred.I think 'd have to be in Hokitika to do any research.
