Graham Thomas

Graham is Head of Applied Research, Production. He is leading a team of about 20 engineers developing next-generation production systems, including object-based audio, immersive video, and applications of AI/ML in live production. He also runs ±«Óãtv R&D's Graduate Scheme.

His technical background is in image processing and computer vision, including augmented reality graphics for broadcast applications, such as sports graphics and virtual studios. He holds an MA in Physics from the University of Oxford and a PhD in Electronic Systems Engineering from the University of Essex.

Graham is the industry Principal Investigator for the Prosperity Partnership launched in 2021 to develop technology for creating and delivering object-based media at scale. He leads the ±«Óãtv's work in the Horizon Europe project on XR production technology, and his team is also working in the Horizon Europe project. He helped establish the , in which ±«Óãtv R&D's audio team is working with 5 leading UK universities. He was a key player in the development of the award-winning sports graphics system and the free-d camera tracking system for virtual studios. His earlier work included motion-compensated standards conversion, which led to the Emmy-award-winning Alchemist standards converter. He also worked on video compression systems including HD-MAC, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. He holds over 20 patents. Graham is a Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey.
