Ìý Civil rape cases Friday 18 January 2002 Ìý
Clifford Ayling is a former GP who is currently serving a prison sentence for sexually assaulting 10 of his women patients. His victims are now suing for damages in the civil courts and last week Ayling was allowed out of prison to attend the trial.

Although the law prevents alleged rapists from cross-examining their victims in criminal courts, they are able to do so in civil trials. Since Ayling has chosen to represent himself he was able to cross-examine his victims in court. The women say they felt humiliated and revolted.
Martha is joined by human rights lawyer, Barbara Hewson and Sandra McNeil from the Rape Crisis Federations.
