DIY smear tests 18 March 2010
Effective, or creating unnecessary anxiety?

Despite the so-called 'Jade Goody effect' which has seen a rise in the number of women attending cervical screening appointments, 20% of those entitled to the test still avoidÌýhaving one. This week a new product has gone on sale online, a DIY smear kit. Some think it will encourage more women to test for cervical cancer. But others are concerned that results could be unreliable and create unnecessary anxiety for those under 25, who are more likely to show false positive results. Dr Anne Szarewski, Clinical Consultant at Cancer Research, and Dr Thom Van Every, responsible for distributing this new kit, join Jenni to discuss the potential positives and negatives of DIY testing for cervical cancer.
