A long-standing employee of Deanscombe Quarry, Moses knows the rules and how to bend them. When quarry owner brings in an unexpected change to how the business is staffed, Moses deliberately makes life difficult for the new recruit.
By 1918, Moses is over-promoted as the least worst option with all the capable men away at war. He holds a flame for a local war widow, despite having many more years and far fewer teeth than her.
