Straight-talking Russian Colonel Ilya is strong and serious. Baffled by the arrival of the Monks' pyramid, and the fact that all the clocks have suddenly turned to 23:57, he's even more confused when he's kidnapped by the Doctor in the TARDIS.

It's not our choice. We are just soldiers in the field.
But Ilya doesn't let that phase him, and shows he's a tough soldier through and through by launching a missile at the alien pyramid from a Russian submarine. After the Monks demonstrate their supreme strength, and show the generals their future dead planet, hard Ilya is the last to relent and shake hands with his opponents. But the Monks' projections have made a mark on him, and he agrees to consent to their offer. Unfortunately for the generals, this brave move sees them meet an untimely end.
