The youngest of the three Gidley sons, Alexander is following a well-trodden family route by training to be an officer. However, his obedient sense of duty is shaken to the core when reacquainted with Martin Ogden, an old school hero who returns from fighting with a Croix de Guerre.
With the weight of expectation laying heavily on Alexander’s youthful shoulders, mother Cora suppresses her protective instincts whilst father Hector thinks he might have a solution to his son’s timidity.
