Billy Winters, a well-to-do landlord comes from a Protestant family that invaded Ireland with the King’s men three hundred years ago and put Catholics like the Maguires off their own land.
He is by nature conservative, determined, obstinate even and fiercely protective of his house, his land, his wealth. Deeply patriarchal, feeling that Catherine and Beth are in some way his possessions he is, nonetheless capable of compassion and kindness.
Full of unconscious fears, he has a horror of losing what he considers his. Billy is a complex, deeply flawed character, deserving of pity as much as contempt.
