Exclusive: Unvaccinated midwife reveals why she’s prepared to lose her job

From 1 April, frontline NHS staff who have not had two jabs will be redeployed or sacked.

From 1 April, any frontline NHS staff who have not had two jabs will be redeployed or sacked. Some healthcare organisations have been warning they’re concerned about how this new law will affect patient care in an already understaffed NHS.

One maternity unit has been in the news over the past few weeks as nearly 40 midwives are refusing to be vaccinated.

In an exclusive interview, Woman’s Hour reporter Carolyn Atkinson spoke to one midwife from the unit, Nia. We agreed not to reveal which unit or Trust they work at. Nia explained why she is refusing the vaccine and how she feels about the prospect of losing her job.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said:

“NHS and care staff do amazing work and we are thankful to those who have chosen to get the vaccine.

“Health and social care workers are responsible for looking after some of the most vulnerable people in society, many of whom are more likely to suffer serious health consequences if exposed to the virus.

"This is about patient safety, and ensuring people in hospital or care have as much protection as possible. Vaccinations remain our best defence against Covid-19.’’
