BiiJ (But is it Jazz?) is a new Midlands-based vocal-led original jazz project created by Redditch saxophonist and songwriter Thomas Hinks.

The project centres around his debut album 'Oh Silly Me', featuring 18 original songs, and aims to revive appreciation of the '30s and '40s show tune genre from the golden age of jazz.

The focus is on clever story-telling lyrics, catchy melodies and sophisticated harmonic progressions.

The album project features one saxophonist, one pianist, two double bassists, two drummers and seven vocalists and includes BiiJ's charity single 'A Frog In The Bell', raising money for tv Children In Need.

“One of the most stunning jazz groups in the UK” - Andrew Marston.

tv Music Introducing in Ross-on-Wye

Our sessions, this month, come from Jacqueline’s Nightclub in Ross-on-Wye.

Under its former name, The Top Spot Ballroom, the venue was popular for bands in the late '60s and throughout the '70s.

The Beatles were booked to play there for £35.

Van Morrison, The Kinks, The Move and Fleetwood Mac have all also played the venue.

Pink Floyd, however,!

Worcester Christmas Lights

At tv Introducing in Hereford & Worcester, we support the very best new music from across our region.

Since 2005,we've broadcast more than 1,000 sessions, helping to showcase some of our area's most talented musicians to a massive audience.

We’ve handpicked some of our favourite acts to join us to switch on Worcester’s Christmas Lights!

Not only is this a fantastic opportunity for the musicians we’ve selected (who didn’t even know they were being considered for this incredible gig!), but also a chance for Worcester to see the amazing talent we have right here on our doorstep. As always, we also hope this will also inspire other musicians to share their music with us.

The event, this year, moves from the Guildhall to the newly-revamped Cathedral Square under the statue of Sir Edward Elgar. The recording and switch-on takes place on Thursday, 22 November with these festive sessions being broadcast throughout December.

Artist of the Week

Carol Lee Sampson has been a firm fixture on the Malvern music scene for a number of years and regularly takes her guitar (and dog Roxy) into dementia units and care homes to perform for the patients.

"I love writing songs that can connect with people", says Carol, who regularly releases charity albums, with Gordon Giltrap featuring on her latest release.

Speaking about her influences, she says: "Firstly, my Dad, who played piano in a jazz quartet. I also loved the Carpenters, Cat Stevens, Beatles, Stevie Wonder, George Benson, Barbra Streisandand Eva Cassidy."

Charity gig

A special gig, this week, has honoured a Worcester guitarist and raised money in his memory, on what would have been his birthday.

Rob Tipton died suddenly in October at the age of 25.

He’s been described as a popular city barman in his job at the Bell in St John’s - so much so - his boss, family and friends agreed to put on the fundraising gig there.

It was in aid of Lukeamia Care, which Rob had suffered as a child.
