KCC Leader says £35k cap on elderly care should be enforced sooner

John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

The leader of Kent County Council has told this programme the government should move more quickly to implement proposals to put a cap on the maximum amount older people should have to pay for their old age care.

Paul Carter argues that the central recommendation of the Dilnot Commission, which could cost the government over 2 billion pounds, is a price worth paying to end the stress and anxiety the majority of older residents and their families are suffering over the issue. But he says the scheme needs to be fully funded (07:07 and 08:07).

There is a warning from the providers of food banks across Kent that rises in food and fuel bills this winter could force more people into a crisis where they cannot afford to eat.

More than 600 people have been helped by Medway's four food banks in the last 5 months (06:25, 07:22 and 08:22).

A day out at Buckingham Palace is not the worst reward for a hard fought sporting season.

But that is exactly how Kent's female cricketers roll. After winning their 5th county championship in seven years, Charlotte Edwards and her star studded side had the prestigious honour of receiving their medals the royal residence (06:39, 08:48).
