Terminally ill Kent woman finds out today if doctor will be struck off

A terminally ill Canterbury woman will hear today if the doctor who failed her will be struck off by the General Medical Council.

Dr Howard Smedley, a retired cancer surgeon previously employed by Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, has admitted a number of allegations of incompetence in his treatment of Debbie Westwick. In 2009 she lodged a complaint with the GMC against him claiming he had given her inappropriate treatment. It ruled yesterday that Dr Smedley was guilty of misconduct, but his future has yet to be decided (06:07, 07:07 and 08:07).

Two of Kent's water companies are to lift their hosepipe bans from tomorrow. Southern Water and Thames Water say record heavy rain since April has restocked reservoirs and improved river levels, but South East Water says its ban will remain in place (06:12, 07:12 and 08:12).

Figures obtained from Kent Police show that during the 2010 World Cup the number of incidents rose by 32% when the 3 Lions won and 24% when they lost (06:25, 07:22 and 08:22).
