Cuts in hospital transport could hit vulnerable patients

John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

A Kent health trust has been accused of "abandoning vulnerable patients," after deciding to scrap its free hospital transport service.

Three months ago, the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust decided to pull the plug on the service, which cost more than £400,000 a year.

Now, a volunteer run community car scheme, which is trying to fill the gap, says it is struggling to cope with the extra demand and may have to close unless more money is found (06:07, 07:07 and 08:07).

The row over where to build a new airport in the South East is becoming increasingly bitter.

Politicians here have long been opposed putting the new airport in North Kent, on the Isle of Grain or in the Thames Estuary.

Earlier on this programme the head of Thurrock council in Essex, John Kent, called suggestions by the leader of Kent County council to build a new hub airport in the South East in Essex "barking" (06:22, 07:22 and 08:22).

John's sporty little number does looks impressive when he is cruising around the streets of Kent, but it does not come cheap to run.

Yesterday we decided it was time he learnt to save a few pennies on fuel with a special lesson from driving instructor Geoff Watkins

Geoff's one a group of instructors in the Medway towns who have been trained by the Energy Trust to teach people smarter driving techniques.

John did two circuits here in Tunbridge Wells, one with him driving normally and the other with some coaching from Geoff (06:54 and 08:53).
