One Kent GP earnt £770,000 last year

John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.

Is any family doctor worth more than £750,000 a year? That is what one GP in Kent was paid last year.

The unidentified doctor's salary of £770,000 is reported to be the highest figure in the country, and towers head and shoulders above the average GP's salary of between £60,000 and £100,000 a year.

A Kent MP is calling for more grammar schools to be built up and down the country. The suggestion, from the Dartford MP Gareth Johnson, will be welcomed by many parents in Kent, for whom the annual scramble for grammar school places is a real headache. Others, however, are opposed to selection on principle saying it creates a two-tier education system.

It is a smelly problem and one which has led a Kent beach to fail water quality standards. Seaweed at Walpole Bay in Margate has put the beach in the bottom 2% in the country. Figures from the Environment Agency show consistently high levels of bacteria in the water, caused by rotten seaweed.
