The big melt

Most of Antarctica is still locked in by sea ice but as the days lengthen that slowly retreats. First to be free is the Antarctic Peninsula which is the arm of the continent that reaches up northwards. For a few months it is possible to reach its coast by sea. But even at the height of the summer only two per cent of the continent is free from ice.
