In War and Peace

As their training progresses some Officer Cadets leave Sandhurst. Those who are left are asked the question – are you able to kill and do you understand the nature of your contract with the Army?

A visit to Brookwood Military Cemetery is part of their education – an Officer’s contract is unlimited liability – and they are shown the grave of a young officer, killed four months after leaving Sandhurst in the service of his country.

Bayoneting exercise follows – the cadets need to turn into “steely eyed dealers of death” and there is no room for hesitation, an officer must set the example, those who do not are cowards.
