Faith in Adversity

Aled Jones finds out how Christian faith helped one mother cope after the tragic loss of her two daughters. Plus, the extraordinary story behind the hymn It Is Well with My Soul.

Aled Jones visits the coast of Kent to meet Mina Smallman, a mother and former archdeacon in the Church of England, who turned to her Christian faith after the brutal murder of her two daughters in 2020. Mina speaks to Aled about how she feels the comforting presence of the Holy Spirit around her, and of her hope of being reunited with her daughters, Bibaa and Nicole, in heaven. Aled also meets Jude Kelly, a charity director who encouraged Mina to share her story with the world to help others going through similar experiences of suffering.

On the 150th anniversary of It Is Well with My Soul, Pam Rhodes meets Lady Djemila Cope, the great-granddaughter of the hymn’s composer, Horatio Spafford, who lost all four of his daughters in a devastating disaster at sea. Pam discovers what led the composer to write this hymn of faith in the wake of such a terrible tragedy and speaks to former Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, to find out what its words mean for Christians in times of adversity today.
