Legacy of Slavery: A Shared History
A portrait of actor David Harewood is commissioned by the descendant of an 18th-century British peer who enslaved the actor's ancestors, to acknowledge their 'shared history'.
The actor David Harewood is best known for his starring role as CIA counterterrorism director, David Estes in the hit TV series ±«Óãtvland. What is less well known is that his ancestors were enslaved on a plantation in the Caribbean owned by the eighteenth-century British peer, the 2nd Earl of Harewood. His descendant, the current earl, David Lascelles, has commissioned a portrait of the actor, as an 'acknowledgment of their shared history'. It has been unveiled at a new exhibition about the actor at Harewood House, near Leeds in West Yorkshire. The ±«Óãtv's culture editor, Katie Razzall, has been given an exclusive preview.
