The 1977 American TV mini-series of Alex Haley's novel 'Roots' altered people's perceptions of slavery, America and black history.

Actor and playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah tells the story of the struggles to bring it to the screen.

He also recalls its impact and its effect on his own life.
