A Letter to Mrs Campbell
Betty Campbell was Wales' first black head teacher. Gavin Porter celebrates the huge influence she had on generations of young people growing up in Butetown - including him.
Betty Campbell was Wales' first black head teacher. She was a champion of multiculturalism, was instrumental in establishing Black History Month in Wales, and a statue of her is about to be unveiled in Cardiff's Central Square. Her story is now recognised and celebrated but what is not often spoken about is the influence she had on her pupils.
What effect did she have on the generations of young people growing up in Butetown during the 70's, 80's and 90's? She set out to push her pupils, to inspire them, and to give them opportunities. And she did. Gavin Porter was one of them. He is now a documentary film maker, a former Creative Associate at National Theatre Wales and the winner of a Bafta Cymru.
To coincide with the unveiling of the statue in Cardiff - this programme is a very personal tribute from some of her former pupils.
