A spiritual comment and prayer to begin the day with Brahmacharini Shripriya Chaitanya, a novice Hindu monk and teacher Good morning. Life in lockdown has thrown many things into relief, among them, the space that we occupy. For many people, life in self-isolation has meant living with less physical company than we’re used to; for many others, it has meant suddenly being thrown together with people that we wouldn’t usually spend so much time with. Whether we are waiting for the day when we can welcome others into our homes, or for a time when we can be in solitude, one thing has become clear: the value of space. What we value is when we have freedom in it: to share our space, but also to keep some for ourselves. By not being able to venture out of their homes, many are not able to spend time alone. For parents of young children there is a new role to occupy: fulltime educator, carer, entertainer, all in one. For some, not having a choice in where they stay and who their space is shared with means they are at increased risk of harm or neglect. Religious communities are held together by their shared beliefs, but also by communal activities: prayer, the celebration of festivals. Our new lifestyle has allowed this to continue through online gatherings, but also given us each the opportunity to use our own space for quiet reflection or in new pastimes. I pray to remain aware of my own space, and of others; to have the wisdom to know when to reach out to others in love and compassion, and when to be with myself. I pray to remember that wherever I am, whoever I may be with, God is always with me. Hari om.
