Prayer for the Day: Wednesday 13th November 2019

Good morning. The Old Testament prophet Micah addressed the question of what the Lord requires of human beings.  He wrote, “… to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”  Today, the 13th November, is World Kindness Day.  Its celebration encourages people to overlook all boundaries that frequently divide us from one another.  The challenge is to make the world a better place by doing good deeds.World Kindness Day started from a Tokyo conference in 1997 and it has since grown to a global movement with nearly thirty nations as active participants.  It has caught the imagination of both individuals and institutions, of schools and community groups. The United Kingdom has participated in Kindness Day since 2010.   Now an increasing number of people all over the country take part in doing random acts of kindness.  For a deed to be kind there is no expectation of any reward or benefit to the giver.  Behind the day is the thought  that , “Kindness has the power to unify a world troubled by political, cultural and economic difference”.   In both the example, and teaching, of Jesus, the call to be kind to one another rings out clearly.  As he dealt with those whom society made “outcasts” we see lives changed and people made whole.   He spoke of caring for those who are hungry, strangers, prisoners, sick …  how we care for people in need reflects our attitude to Jesus himself.  Kindness is a characteristic not confined to Christian teaching.  The Dalai Lama said, “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.”Or as Mark Twain put it, “Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”Lord, help us today to do some acts of kindness that will help to make the world a better place.  Amen.
