Prayer for the Day - Thursday 14th November 2019
Good morning.I had never heard of Grandma Moses until I started an art class last month. There I was, moving towards the landmark of “three score years and ten” and just beginning to study watercolours.  Today happens to be the anniversary of the birthday of that great impressionist artist, Claude Monet, whose first success in drawing came when he was just fifteen years old. Grandma Moses began painting in earnest at age seventy-eight! They have this in common both have had their work reproduced on postage stamps!Male and Female, made in the image of God and I believe that reflection of the Divine Being propels us into doing something creative. Genesis gives a picture of the days of creation. God saw what had been made and declared, “it was very good.”Men and women take the stuff of earth, wood, stone, paint, flour, wool … and much, much more … and turn these raw materials into something beautiful to hold, or to look at, to eat or to wear.  Being part of the process of making something beautiful gives great joy itself. Watch a child absorbed in painting a picture; study a teenager mixing flour, sugar, eggs and butter together to produce a cake; or see a sculptor at work in stone … in every creative act we are aware that something of the image of God is observed.  We might not always get it perfect … the dropped stitch, the place where the wood carving tool slipped, the unwanted drop of paint on a watercolour … but … despite the imperfections we have been part of a creative process, a gift that comes from God.
So Lord, help us to use, and develop, the gifts that you have given us, and so rejoice in your work of creation. Amen.
So Lord, help us to use, and develop, the gifts that you have given us, and so rejoice in your work of creation. Amen.
