In a glorious riot of colour, they conjure up a vanished world of street parties, shared labour and homemade entertainment.

As family members and old friends sit together to watch their old films for the first time in years, we share their emotional reactions at the sight of their loved ones and their younger selves on-screen. They include a grocer's daughter from north Wales with links to Russian aristocracy, a novelist who grew up in a house with no TV and whose father shot a series of extraordinary dramas to entertain his five daughters, and a group of childhood friends from the Tiger Bay Rainbow Club. As they recount the stories of the flickering figures on-screen, these films reveal the extraordinary joys, dramas and heartbreaks of ordinary people, from Denbighshire to the Dulais Valley.
