My Indian Summer Revisited

Richard Melvin revisits some of the places in India that inspired his life and career and meets other Scots on the same road to self-discovery to took in his twenties.

When people in Scotland retire, they make all sort of plans. Downsize, move closer to grandchildren, buy a boat or a cottage by the sea. Take up golf, fishing or hill walking...

But every year thousands of Scots make the 'big journey', no, not the final journey, the one they mean to do in their twenties, the one where they intended to find themselves.

That passage to India and the search for self-fulfilment.

But is it too late?

15 years ago Richard Melvin, like 1000s of other Scots, took some time out and went travelling round India. He went to find himself, but on the journey found so much more.

Now, aged 42 and in the throws of a mid-life crisis, unresolved by abstinence from alcohol, gym membership, 10k races and even a convertible, Richard is going back to where his adult journey began to find more answers - this time about love, parenting, career, relationships and the quest to live the best life.

He plans to meet some of those Scots - young and old - on the road to self-discovery, and try to recapture some of the peace and fulfilment that he felt all those years ago.

But can he?
