Your rights on lost luggage

Making a lost luggage claim

1. Complain to the airline as soon as the bag goes missing. For a lost bag it needs to be submitted within 7 days. For delayed luggage, you usually have 21 days. More information

2. Secondly, provide all receipts including luggage labels and proof of purchase for the items in the bag. Even better, take photos before you jet off so you remember what was packed.

3. Thirdly, a missing bag is declared officially lost after 21 days. At this point, you can go to your travel insurer and make a claim. The average insurance policy covers up to £2,000 for lost luggage.

4. If the airline is unfairly refusing your claim or has left you waiting for a reply for more than eight weeks, you can escalate your complaint to the Aviation Dispute Resolution Service. See
