±«Óãtv Symphony Orchestra celebrates the music of Turkey in Diverse Orchestras Week 2008

The ±«Óãtv Symphony Orchestra clears a week of its schedule to explore and celebrate the music of Turkey in this year's Diverse Orchestras Week.

Ìý

A programme of performance and free learning events led by members of the orchestra and visiting Turkish musicians offers audiences of all ages the opportunity to discover more about this country's cultural heritage.

Ìý

Taking place at ±«Óãtv Maida Vale Studios from 17 to 21 November, this is the fifth year of the project which has previously focussed upon the music of Indonesia, Africa, Iran and South America.

Ìý

The Ali Tüfekçi Ensemble from Istanbul showcase the music of their homeland on traditional Turkish instruments. They join members of the ±«Óãtv Symphony Orchestra to perform a new piece created over the course of the week which reflects their collaboration.

Ìý

The closing concert features a new work by Michael Ellison, who lives and works in Istanbul.

Ìý

"Turkish" Concerto, K 219 for Ney, Kemençe, Kanun, Ud, Bendir, Cello and Orchestra has been specially commissioned by the ±«Óãtv.

Ìý

The programme also includes works by Turkish composers Ulvi Cemal Erkin, Mahir Cetiz, Ahmed Adnan Saygun and Kamran Ince alongside traditional Turkish music and Mozart's Turkish-inspired Overture to Die Entführung aus dem Serail.

Ìý

Participation and hands-on experience is at the heart of the week and Turkish Delights: Come and Play and Dance! is a free event on Wednesday 19 November at 7.00pm which offers the opportunity for all to join in a Turkish rhythm workshop and to follow a demonstration of Anatolian dancing.

Ìý

Another of the ±«Óãtv Symphony Orchestra's popular Family Orchestras has been brought together for this project and members take up their own instruments to perform a Turkish-themed programme at the Maida Vale studios.

Ìý

The week also includes an event where young musicians are invited to play side-by-side with members of the ±«Óãtv SO.

Ìý

The ±«Óãtv SO and Ali Tüfekçi Ensemble will give a series of informal talks and demonstrations in local schools and a special concert for schools will take place at the studios.

Ìý

The newly appointed ±«Óãtv SO Learning Manager, Ellara Wakely, said: "Diverse Orchestra Week is a flagship project for the ±«Óãtv Symphony Orchestra, which demonstrates the orchestra's commitment to creative learning events.

Ìý

"It offers everyone involved a unique opportunity to make musical discoveries and share their love of performance."

Ìý

±«Óãtv Radio 3 broadcasts highlights from across the week on 15 December in Performance On 3 at 7.00pm.
