New generation of composers win out in shortlist for British Composer Awards revealed on Radio 3's In Tune

±«Óãtv Radio 3 today revealed the shortlist of composers
nominated for the British Composer Awards, the prestigious new
music awards run by the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters.
Ìý
Significantly the age range for the nominees has continued to
drop and gives the classical community every reason to have
faith that the next generation of top UK composers are already
doing great work.
Ìý
Nominated composers include Judith Bingham,
James MacMillan and Elliot Carter alongside younger composers
including John Holland, Luke Bedford and Joe Cutler.

This year an impressive 268 submissions were received for
works premiered between 1 April 2007 and 31 March 2008.
Ìý
The
judging panels are made up of more than 60 music
professionals and have chosen three works in each category to
make up this year's shortlists.
Ìý
Due to the open nomination
policy the selection of works accepted and judged is
extremely diverse.
Ìý
A new initiative for 2008 is the Sonic Art Award. For the
first time a category will be devoted to the recognition of
Sonic Art, which will focus on live electronics, interactive
installations and collaborative multi-media performance.
Ìý
Giving added weight to this innovation, there will also be two
Sonic Art performances wrapped into the Awards ceremony.
Ìý
The
artists, Eugene Perera and Mick Grierson, will present their
interactive work as part of collaboration for the awards
between the academy and Sonic Arts Network.
Ìý
Elliot Carter is on the shortlist for the International Award
for Three Illusions For Orchestra; Carter will be
celebrating his 100th birthday this year.
Ìý
Joining him is one
of only three female composers to make this year's shortlist,
Kaija Saarioha for Mirage, and the established German
composer Hans Werner Henze for Sebastian im Traum which
premiered at the ±«Óãtv Proms in 2007.

Radio 3 partners the British Academy of Composers &
Songwriters and the Performing Rights Society for the British
Composer Awards and today announced the shortlist on the In Tune programme.
Ìý
Radio 3 also broadcasts a five-part series called Composing
Today as part of Performance On 3, which runs in the week
leading up to the awards ceremony on 2 December.
Ìý
It will
explore many of the current issues surrounding contemporary
music.

The winners of the 2008 British Composer Awards are announced
at the Law Society, London on Tuesday 2ÌýDecember, and a
special programme devoted to the awards is broadcast on ±«Óãtv
Radio 3, In Tune, on Wednesday 3ÌýDecember at 7.00pm.
