Phil Redmond, Germaine Greer and Lord Puttnam launch 100 Free Thoughts on Radio 3

One hundred key figures from the arts, media, politics and science offer their personal cultural thoughts for the day in Free Thought to be broadcast daily on ±«Óãtv Radio 3 and ±«Óãtv Radio Merseyside from Saturday 2 August.

Free Thought launches Free Thinking 08, Radio 3 and Radio Merseyside's festival of ideas, and marks Liverpool's special cultural role as European Capital of Culture 2008.
Ìý
The speakers will include prominent Liverpudlians and a diverse range of figures from the UK and beyond.
Ìý
The two-minute contributions will be a reflection or provocation, or simply shed light on a corner of Britain's cultural life, and will be broadcast in the 100 days leading up to the festival.

Phil Redmond starts Free Thought on Saturday 2 August putting the case for culture for all.

Other contributors include:
- Lord Puttnam on why cinema matters;
- Frank Cotrell Boyce advocating drama for young people;
- Liverpool's Singh Twins on painting and shared heritage;
- Germaine Greer discussing our obsession with houses;
- Liam Fogarty defending city living;
- Howard Jacobson on the politics of envy;
- Janet Street-Porter on how the British landscape inspires and comforts;
- Cristoph Grunenberg on the continuing might of Viennese Culture;
- Stuart Maconie bemoaning our snobbery over guilty pleasures;
- Grayson Perry telling us that originality is over-rated.

Free Thought will be broadcast daily after the 8.30am news during Breakfast on Radio 3, and on Radio Merseyside between 5 and 7pm.

Radio 3's arts and ideas programme Night Waves will also broadcast Free Thought, picking up some of the issues raised for discussion, when the new series returns on 15 September.

The Free Thinking festival returns to Liverpool for a weekend of debates, talks, films, drama, performance and conversation from Friday 31 October to Sunday 2 November.

Now in its third year, Free Thinking puts leading thinkers from the arts, science, politics, philosophy and technology in front of live audiences for discussion and debate.

The first Free Thinking festival was held in Liverpool in November 2006, focusing on ideas for the future, with contributions from Brian Eno, AS Byatt, Frank Field, Piers Gough and Linda Grant.
Ìý
Last year's festival saw up to 3,000 people attend the festival in Liverpool for a range of talks, discussions, workshops, drama and live performances exploring freedom, equality and education.
