Radio 3 at WOMAD 2008


±«Óãtv Radio 3 returns to the WOMAD festival for the eighth year, as exclusive media partner broadcasting live from the festival site at Charlton Park throughout the weekend of Friday 25 July to Sunday 27 July.

Radio 3 will be hosting its own stage and will be broadcasting highlights from the Open Air Stage and the Siam Tent, with exclusive interviews and performances from the on-site Radio 3 studio.

Broadcast highlights include performances from ±«Óãtv Radio 3 Awards for World Music 2008 winners Rachid Taha and Transglobal Underground, as well as Los Angeles-based Cambodian rockers Dengue Fever, Canadian singer songwriter Martha Wainwright, desert bluesmen Terakaft, Senegal's Orchestra Baobab, highlights of the Sufi night including performances by Sheikh Taha and Asif Ali Khan, as well as music from the Radio 3 Stage.

The weekend's broadcasts will be presented by Radio 3's World Music presenters Andrew McGregor, Charlie Gillett, Lopa Kothari, Lucy Duran and Mary Ann Kennedy.

Set in Charlton Park's picturesque arboretum, the ±«Óãtv Radio 3 Stage presents a diverse selection of artists celebrating music from around the globe.

Ìý

Artists appearing exclusively on the Radio 3 stage include: Paprika Balkanicus, providing a fiery blend of traditional and gypsy music from the Balkans and Eastern Europe; punk survivor and dub master Jah Wobble with his latest project, Chinese Dub, combining his trademark sound with Chinese melodies and instrumentation; and Hotel Palindrone, a multi-instrument Austrian folk-roots four-piece.

Other artists appearing on the Radio 3 Stage include: Niger's Malam Mamane Barka, a desert bluesman born into a family of Toubou nomads and master of the biram, a five-string harp-like instrument; Irish folk star Sharon Shannon who blends traditional Irish music with world, roots, reggae, bluegrass, gospel and blues; former Kenyan tax inspectors Kenge Kenge Orutu Systems; and ±«Óãtv Radio 3 Awards for World Music 2008 winners Justin Adams & Juldeh Camara with their highly acclaimed brand of African-inspired delta blues.

The stage is hosted by World On 3's Lopa Kothari and Mary Ann Kennedy. Reviving a WOMAD tradition, World On 3's Charlie Gillett hosts the Radio 3 Stage on Sunday night.

Charlie will be joined by special guests appearing at the festival, including Radio 3 Awards for World Music 2008 winner and Chinese sensation Sa Dingding, performing an exclusive acoustic set and American folk singer Devon Sproule.

Highlights of Charlie's show are broadcast in World On 3 on Monday 28 July.
