The Friends of Norfolk Dialect - FOND - has been awarded almost £4000 to buy recording equipment to further its aim of saving the county's dialect for posterity.

"It's a living organism and we are going to keep it alive," said FOND chairman Keith Skipper, who submitted the application for lottery funding.

"It's going to be great fun and also something very worthwhile," he added.

Material recorded by the group will he handed to the Norfolk Record Office where the public will have access to the material.

"When FOND was formed a couple of years ago, one of our principal objectives was to preserve and promote the Norfolk dialect and we saw as an integral part of that an archive system," he said.

Talk Norfolk:

"We thought it would be nice to do something that isn't just a social bit of fun for those people who joined FOND - we want to make a real contribition to future generations.

"Everybody tells us so much of the Norfolk dialect is disappearing and we wanted to do something practical as well as sociable and amusing. It is so often used quite rightly as a vehicle for humour but there is a serious side to this."

As part of the serious side, the group has made inroads into combatting the Mummzet school of drama in its efforts to get the Norfolk accent right on radio and television.

"We have prompted and prodded - in fact we've made a bit of a nuisance of ourselves - there is a growing need to get this accuracte.

"It more than just an annoyance - it's an insult," said Mr Skipper.
