Tanzania Adapts

Our new Kiswahili podcast examining the impacts of climate change, and how to adapt, is produced by our team in Tanzania

Published: 19 January 2023

For many Tanzanians, the term ‘climate change’ refers to changes in weather or seasons, and few people understand its impacts at home and around the world. But experts agree that climate change is already affecting our lives, creating many challenges and some opportunities for change.

Our new podcast, Tanzania Adapts, is part of a wider project to explore the ways in which climate change is affecting people in Tanzania, by interviewing experts and examining challenges including health, livelihoods, water scarcity and food insecurity.

The podcast is produced and presented by Marygoreth Richard, who tells us why presenting the podcast is important to her.

"Tanzania Adapts helps women in Tanzania to understand and cope with the impacts of climate change, by providing them with information that addresses ways in which climate change affects their lives and their community, and how to adapt to those changes. In the podcast, we put emphasis on women by featuring them as experts with a voice in the climate change discussion agenda. They uniquely understand the challenges because they live them.

"Research shows that women are more vulnerable to climate change - socially, economically, and culturally. In our podcast, we highlight specific issues that affect women directly, including how global warming affects maternal health, and ways to tackle gender-based violence exacerbated by the impacts of climate change.

"Producing and presenting the podcast gives me an opportunity to lend my voice in articulating the opportunities and struggles particularly faced by women and girls in Tanzania that are caused by climate change and gender. We provide a free space and platform for them to discuss issues of concern, and support them take positive action that affects their lives."
