She'd Rather Be Right Here

Having spent her teens working towards a record deal, this native Londoner got her first big break in 2013 with the dance producer Route 94, who had heard Jess’s arresting voice and wanted her to replace a sample he couldn’t legally use for his song My Love. Annie Mac heard the track, liked it, and added it to her compilation Annie Mac Presents, which also tweaked the ears of Clean Bandit, who had this song called Rather Be that needed a damn good singing to.

Both songs ended up making their chart debuts at No.1, with Rather Be eventually winning a Grammy for Best Dance Recording and becoming the most streamed track of the year. By this time, Jess had started attending songwriting workshops with the likes of Iggy Azalea, Little Mix, Rita Ora and Rudimental, and decided her next release—Right Here—would be under her own name, which harmed its ascent into the Top 10 in no way whatsoever. Then there was Real Love, her second collaboration with Clean Bandit and almost her third No.1.

It's interesting to note that all of these colossal hit songs (Hold My Hand notwithstanding) have two-word titles. Just something Jess might want to bear in mind for future releases, should she ever become superstitious.
