The Break's Over, They Take Over

If ever there was a band with unfinished business, it’s this lot. They spent a decent chunk of the noughties as a world-beating rock phenomenon and standard-bearers for the emo scene with anthems such as Sugar, We’re Going Down, This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race and Thnks Fr Th Mmrs. Articulate, kohl-eyed and unafraid of the long song title, Pete Wentz would deliver lyrical manifestos for his valiant partner Patrick Stump to sing, while Joe Trohlman and Andy Hurley made them as loud and ferocious as possible.

Their staggering success took its toll for a bit, and they took a hiatus in 2009, then hugged it out and blasted back in 2013—via a particularly fine session for Zane Lowe—with a song that boasts perhaps the most perfect Fall Out Boy title ever; My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up), and the album Save Rock and Roll. These were swiftly followed earlier this year with Uma Thurman—surely the only pop song to sample the theme music to the ‘60s comedy/horror TV show The Munsters.

And now, having conquered the world not once, but twice, it’s the perfect time for this superpowered quartet to make their first appearance at a Radio 1 Big Weekend. Fall in, boys!
