Concert Information
"The artist is always searching for the meaning of life, his own and that of mankind, searching for truth,” wrote Martinů, and today we hear this in his Fifth Symphony, composed in the months after the end of the Second World War.
It was written for the leading orchestra of his homeland, the Czech Philharmonic, premiered by them in 1947 and despite his nationality, it is the only one of Martinů’s symphonies to have been premiered by a Czech orchestra.
We also hear Piano Concerto No.27, Mozart’s final Piano Concerto, in today’s live ±«Óătv Radio 3 broadcast. A work of unusually introspective lyricism, it is seen by some to express the resignation and weariness of spirit which had overtaken Mozart after two years of dwindling success and reduced productivity.
