About This Event

The ±«Óătv National Orchestra of Wales crosses the Severn from its Cardiff base in the company of the Norwegian- American conductor Joseph Swensen – well known to British listeners for his successful period at the head of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. The programme consists of three familiar masterpieces of the Romantic era. The First Suite from Grieg’s music for Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt includes the well-known “Morning Mood” and “In the Hall of the Mountain King”. Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto would deserve its universal popularity even if had not been plundered for the film Brief Encounter. We can expect an authentically Russian interpretation from Yevgeny Sudbin, hailed by the Daily Telegraph as possessing “the touch of a true master” and by Piano magazine as an artist “who seems destined to take his place among the elect”. Tchaikovsky’s passionate last symphony, the PathĂ©tique, provides a perfect close to the evening and to this year’s Mozartfest.
