Mendelssohn’s magnificent Violin Concerto is the epitome of musical Romanticism – and with rising-star virtuoso Alina Pogostkina joining the orchestra tonight, it’s in excellent hands. The 1845 premiere was conducted by Danish composer Niels Gade, whose touching First Symphony precedes it on the programme. Before John Storgårds ends with Sibelius’s haunting Seventh Symphony, he’ll be bringing us Webern’s colourful arrangement of the Ricercare a 6 from Bach’s Musical Offering, described by the pianist Charles Rosen as 'among the greatest achievements of Western European civilisation.'
