Concert Information

Forget what you thought you knew about orchestral concerts; this new and innovative series request that you DO turn on your mobile phones and tablets.

The ±«Óãtv Philharmonic, in partnership with the University of Salford, will be exploring new and rarely performed pieces – bringing audience immersion and new technology to the forefront.

This evening:
The Red Brick Sessions return to the University of Salford with conductor Anna-Maria Helsing, who has gained outstanding reputation with leading Scandinavian orchestras and opera houses.

Opening our evening is Respighi’s suite The Birds - transcribing birdsong into musical notation and mimicking fluttering wings and scratching feet. Sibelius’s plaintive Scene with cranes continues our theme and turns the spotlight on two young Scandinavian composers: Andrea Tarrodi, whose Birds of Paradise was inspired by watching the ±«Óãtv’s Planet Earth films, and one of Minna Leinonen’s most recent pieces, Raven, which explores the dual cultured identities of this dark angel of death and its bringing of brightness and enlightenment.

To end, we hear Cantus Arcticus from Rautavaara. Subtitled Concerto for Birds and Orchestra, this piece incorporates recordings of birdsong from the Arctic Circle and the bogs of Finland.

At the interval, join host Elizabeth Alker (±«Óãtv Radio 6 Music and Radio 3) for an interval discussion.
